Earn $10,000 While You Sleep with This Highly Paid Side-Hustle

What if we told you, you could earn thousands of dollars in your sleep? No, you’re not dreaming. Let’s talk about sleep studies. Many hospitals will offer up big bucks for your participation, literally paying you to fall asleep. This could be an awesome side-hustle if you are looking to make a decent amount of money in a short-time.

What Are Sleep Studies?

According to the National Sleep Foundation, 50 to 70 million Americans suffer from chronic sleep disorders. The foundation says, “Untreated sleep disorders have been linked to hypertension, heart disease, stroke, depression, diabetes and other chronic diseases. Sleep problems can take many forms and can involve too little sleep, too much sleep or inadequate quality of sleep.”

Much like other clinical trials, scientists are keen to find out how sleep affects people’s health. That’s why they are offering up thousands of dollars to participants. Most studies want healthy adults with consistent sleep cycles, but they are studies for sleep apnea and insomnia, too.

You can find sleep centers near you here. To participate, you’ll need to qualify – yet you’ll probably be a good candidate for more studies than you think. To apply you should take a survey, and factors like age, health, how long you can stay in the hospital will determine if you are selected.

How Much Can You Earn?

Writer, Jillian Shea took part in two sleep studies and made a combined $12,000. For one 4-day study Shea earned $4,000, and for a week-long study, she was paid $8,000. Not bad for 11 days’ worth of work. Some 7-day studies pay as much $10,000 too. This is a fantastic money earner if you are a student with days off, or are simply tired and want to take a week off from your 9-5.

What Happens During a Study?

Once you get accepted, the recruiter will call you and talk to you all the time, getting to know you and your sleep patterns. Then you’ll visit the hospital for all the usual tests like a physical and a psychological exam. You’ll need to prove that you can handle isolation and the hospital environment.

These small tests are all paid too, from $25 to $100. So, if you get cold feet at this stage you can drop out and still be paid for your time. After these exams, your recruiter will call you every day, checking up on you more than your own Mom!

Some studies take place at the hospital, but others you can do from your own bed. You’ll need to keep a log of your progress, documenting what time you fell asleep and woke up etc. Your doctor may set bedtime curfews that you need to adhere to, as well.

Think of The Money

However, it’s not all roses – which is probably why these studies pay so much. Get ready for isolation during the observation period. That means, no clock, phone, laptop or window in your room. The doctor determines when day and night is, which is a touch unsettling.

In some studies, you may be required to stay awake for a long time or sit in one position for 6 hours for example. In times like these, a bedpan will become your friend. You might also encounter other unwelcoming devices like a rectal thermometer (sorry) and an IV. Well, you are being paid well for a reason.

On the upside, you can use your time wisely. You’ll likely be quite cut-off from the outside world but this is a great opportunity for you to read books, draw or paint or even write. Think of it as a mini relaxation holiday, as you’ll get much-needed sleep after all. Not to mention, a ton of dollars.
