How This Guy Quit His Job to Travel 31,000 Miles Around Australia with His Cat

Would you ever have the guts to quit your job, and move out of your house to live in a van? Meet Rich East and his gorgeous rescue cat called Willow. This sweet duo packed it all in 2.5 years ago and hit the road to start most amazing adventures of their lives.

Hit the Road Cat

Rich East describes himself as a chauffeur, cuddle provider and snack-time attendant to his cat, Willow. He told Bored Panda, how in 2015, he decided to take the trip of a lifetime.

After selling his house and all of his possessions, Rich left his native Tasmania. But there was one thing he couldn’t part with, his beautiful black cat, Willow. She’s now an Instagram star and you can see all the cats pics on @VanCatMeow.

Since leaving Tasmania, the pair have traveled to all 6 states and 2 territories of Australia. “I’m so proud of Willow, she’s the cat that made my van a home and the whole of Australia her backyard,” Rich says. They’ve sailed down the Great Barrier Reef, been camping in the mountains, and racked up 50,000km on the van’s clock.

Rich says, “We’ve achieved so much together and seen some amazing places. I can’t imagine being on this trip without her by my side.”

Loving Every Meowment

According to Rich, “Some people think it’s odd that I’m traveling with a cat, but Willow is so chilled out and absolutely loves our new lifestyle.”

Rich keeps Willow safe using a tracker on her collar. If she decides to take a walk down by the beach or a hike in the mountains, Rich can always find her. She’s also the star of Rich’s blog, VanCatMeow, where he writes about their life on the road.

Man and cat are nearing their home once again. But Rich and Willow have become well accustomed to the nomadic lifestyle, and won’t be stopping anytime soon. He says, “You have to choose what makes you happy in this life and while we can keep going, why would we stop?”
